The Things I Do For Love! (Custom Division) UPDATED WITH LINKS!

These two beautiful people are my friends, Michelle and Scotty. They're getting married in a couple of months. So Michelle thought it would be fun if I created a custom wedding cake topper for them.Notice anything about them?  Yes, they are both beautiful. But the difference between them is that Michelle was born that way and Scotty has to work at it every single day. He's a body builder. You think he looks big here?   You should see him on stage after he's pumped up!  Check out these shots here and here ! Michelle suggested that I should play with the difference in their sizes for the piece. I liked the idea, but Michelle brought up a good point. It would be easy to make her look like a child instead of just making her look smaller... and that would be... creepy. So I thought the solution should be to make him really big and her really small, like small enough to sit on his bicep... So first, I roughed out the pose with some sculpey and wire... Then I defi...

Last week, I once again got to work with the amazing kids of Edmonds Elementary School. This time we were creating a 3-D collage piece for the annual art auction. The kids came up with some great stuff, but this time was a little different... I asked them to think of titles for their work. Check out what they came up with...      the one on the right is called "Mosquito"

Imagination... use it or lose it!

So last week, I saw a couple of movies. One I really wanted to because it looked like a textbook example of how not to market a good film and one I stumbled on to and kept watching because it was a textbook example of how to make a bad film. That guy with the four arms is from the good film, "John Carter". Make that, the great film. Often I'll go to a genre film and justify liking it because of the sheer amount of imagination it's throwing up on the screen, regardless of success. "JC" pulls it off with success to spare... imagination, stunning production design, good actors, even the ones voicing CGI creations like Tars Tarka up there (he's a martian warrior with a sense of compassion within a survive at all costs culture. Willem Dafoe just hits it out of the park with his voice acting. At one point, he has a telescope in two hands, his reins in a third, and he still has one hand left over to smack the hero with!). It even has a very satisfying plot...

Hooray! I've finally finished moving my workspace out of my house and into... the "Dungeon" at Quantum. It feels really good to have some space to breathe in around the house. One of the things I realized about the way I work is that I'll find an odd thing to work with, it will inspire me and I'll pick it up, planning to make something brilliant, but before I can, I'll find another thing and another and pretty soon I'll have a pile of ideas that I've never brought to completion and it just kills my spirit to look at it filling my living space. So, I have moved all that stuff out,  and in the process tossed a bunch of things and donated a bunch of other things and just whittled down the pile of potential. Some things will come to fruition, some won't, I suppose. Ideas don't seem to be a problem for me... it's time to see what shows up now. As for what I'm doing with the open space... I guess I now have a gallery!    It'll ...

I'm doing some reimaging of my web presence this week so,  in the meantime , here's a comission I did around 1998. These were commissioned by a client as a gift for her husband who was a big fan of mysteries... so who better for a set of bookends that Sherlock Holmes and his nemesis, Professor Moriarty?   If you would like me to create something special for you, please drop me a line at artboy@drizzle.com

Meet my brother . He's going on 54 years old. He's a father. He's about to be a grandfather for the second time. And he's sober. He has been for years now.I don't think he'd mind me mentioning that to you. Give him the chance, he'll talk your ear off about sobriety. Believe me. I know from experience. He can go on for hours talking about where he's been and where he is now. But that's okay with me. AA and NA saved his life. Well, he would probably say his higher power did. And I might say that the choice he made to go to rehab instead of a bar one morning did. Or that the woman at the front desk who slipped him on the bus to the treatment facility after his rehab roommate skipped out and my brother begged her to give him that guy's slot did it... who can say? It's all about the minute to minute choices we all make. To drink or not to drink. To show up or stay home. To pick up the phone or leave it for voice mail... A couple of weeks ago, I ...
