Where has that Artboy been lately?

Image
I've been burning the midnight oil getting ready for the Bellevue Art Museum Artsfair (so if the photos are blurry, blame me not the camera). I'll be there in booth G-15  all weekend, until 9:30 Friday and Saturday and until 6 on Sunday. It's my last show of the summer in the Northwest, so come out and take some of these new guys home with you! You wouldn't believe some of the things I found buried in my studio while I was looking for ingredients! All robots go to heaven...  gargoyle guys working my way through charm school... http://www.bellevuearts.org/fair/index.htm

Tueday Night At The Crescent

Image
Often I will find a "thing", a little something that I know I want to use in another something, but I don't know what that something will be yet... so it sits on my workbench, on the edge of my imagination until an idea clicks into clarity (or I have an impending show and I need another piece). This one came from a pencil sharpener. I was doing a murder mystery last year and one of the strange red-herring clues I used to implicate a suspect was this little blue plastic pencil sharpener shaped like a boom box. It wound up coming home with me in my detective bag and I realized I had to use it in something. It took until yesterday to figure out what... Last night,  I turned it into a tribute to the singers at my favorite Seattle karaoke bar!

Surf's Up!

Meanwhile, in between artshows, I  squeezed out another commission! My friend Alex Harrington is getting married to the lovely Brandy this weekend. They seem to be doing everything right for their wedding (by which I mean that they are doing everything  just the way they damned well please!). They have a favorite movie... It stars these two... lovebirds. ...so why would they have a guy in a penguin suit on top of their cake when they can have the real thing? Alex's Mom, the amazing and talented Kim Groff-Harrington, commissioned me to create the two leads, Cody and Lani, to sit atop the wedding cake! I do all sorts of commissions for folks, sometimes original work, but often, images or characters that are already out there in the collective consciousness, superheroes, movie stars, even beloved pets. This piece was an interesting challenge, since the characters are so stylized, but the more I worked with them, the more attached I got to them. Ultimately, I think I ...

Is it hot in here...?

Image
Yes. It is. It is hot in here. It is hot out there. It is hot in here and it is hot and sunny out there. It's going to be a beautiful weekend, so get out there and enjoy it! And what better way to enjoy it than to go to a street fair... like the Ballard Seafood Fest on NW Market St. in Seattle. I'll be there, in booth #65 at the corner of NW Market St. and Leary Way! So will this guy ... and this guy... and this guy... I'm trying to get the Seafoodfest to recognize this little mermaid pin as their official mascot. I think she might be trying too hard. Next week, my sweet Lindsey Lane is going to deliver a lecture at the Vermont College of  Fine Arts, after which she will be awarded her MFA. Normally, someone in her position w ould expect presents at this point. But not her... no... she's GIVING presents... to her four faculty advisors... and here they are... "Is this a big Poetry moment?" "Back, Back, Fearnando!" "Up with Loopiness!" "Or else, go aft with Glee, eh?"

Let me entertain you...

Image
Alright... here we go... catching up on things. I'm back from my travels and my camera issues are solved... so here's something new.... "Let Me Entertain You"... from the collection of Jan Holland-Malcom. Doesn't she have a great husband? Oops... was this supposed to be a surprise?

In the Groove...

There are times when life is so hard that all you want to do is lay there (and by you, I mean me). But one of the advantages of being in this life is that if I don't show up with my work, I don't eat. So I have to show up. And I have to work. So I am fortunate in that when i start working, my mind starts taking off. And things like this happen... This is one of the pieces I came up with in the week when I got back from Florida... It's called "You won't even notice me" I'll post more soon when I get my camera issues resolved. If you want to see it in person come to LiveArts, the Bothell Art Festival this weekend. http://liveartsbothell.org/ And if you mention the secret password, you'll get 10% off the price of your purchase! This week's password... "I'm Batman!" See you soon! "You won't even notice me" is available in my Etsy Store.
